# Kraken

> Connect Kraken crypto exchange accounts to Sure

Kraken is a cryptocurrency exchange. Sure connects to Kraken using a read-only API key and imports your combined crypto holdings and spot trade history.

## What is imported

Sure imports one combined Crypto exchange account per Kraken connection, containing:

* Current crypto holdings and balances
* Spot trade fills (buy/sell history)

## Setting up Kraken

### Step 1: Create a Kraken API key

1. Go to [Kraken API settings](https://pro.kraken.com/app/settings/api).
2. Create a new API key with the following permissions only:
   * **Query Funds**
   * **Query Closed Orders & Trades**

<Warning>
  Do not grant trading, cancellation, withdrawal, export, ledger, Earn, staking, or transfer permissions. Sure only imports balances, holdings, and spot trade fills. Granting write permissions is unnecessary and a security risk.
</Warning>

3. Copy the **API Key** and **Private Key** shown after creation.

### Step 2: Add the connection in Sure

1. Go to **Settings → Providers**.
2. Find the **Kraken** section.
3. Enter a connection name, paste your **API Key** and **Private Key**, and save.
4. Sure begins syncing your Kraken exchange account automatically.

### Step 3: Import the account

After the first sync, your Kraken exchange account appears in the setup queue. Click **Import Account** in the provider panel to add it to your account list.

## Multiple connections

If you have multiple Kraken accounts, add a separate named connection for each one. Each connection imports one combined crypto account.

## Troubleshooting

### Credentials need updating

If the connection shows a reconnect prompt, your API key may have been revoked or the credentials may have expired. Generate a new API key from Kraken and update the connection in **Settings → Providers → Kraken**.

### No accounts found

After adding a connection, wait for the first sync to complete. If no accounts appear after syncing, verify that your API key has the **Query Funds** permission enabled.

### Balance shown as approximate

When the exact exchange rate for a given date is unavailable, Sure shows the balance as approximate. The balance updates to the exact figure on the next sync when rate data becomes available.
